1984 was a pretty good year, Van Halen still had David Lee Roth as their lead singer, Ghostbuster and Beverly Hills Cop were the top grossing movies of the year and Vanderbilt was ranked in the top 25. To make the news even sweeter for Vandy fans, the hated Tennessee Volunteers are 1-2, unranked and are on a downward spiral they are not likely to get off any time soon. The Commodores will end the month of September with a bette overall record and a better SEC record than the Big Orange.
"We're proud of the ranking. It reflects our guys being 4-0, but I think voters are also seeing a team that plays hard and one that does everything it can to win games," Coach Bobby Johnson said. "As a coach, that's all you can ask.
"We're going to enjoy this for a day, then get back to work and try to become a better football team."
Will it last? The Dores get Auburn in two weeks at Dudley Field and after watching the Tigers' defense Saturday night, watch out Dores. Vandy better play a great game on offense, that Auburn defense has several players who will be getting an NFL paycheck in the future.
But for now Vandy fans can walk a little prouder, they have the highest ranked football team in the state.

Vandy fans are as happy as they can be. My father-in-law has had Vandy season tickets for 25-30 years and he has a Vandy hat, shirt or Vandy something or other almost everyday. Big times for the black and gold.
