Wade Phillips had been under orders to not talk to the media. After some of his comments this week at the NFL owners meeting, Jerry Jones may look at reinstating the order.
Phillips said that an NFL coach should be judged after 4 years not after 2 or 3.
Said Phillips; "Well, most cases it takes about four years to find out how good a coach is," Phillips said. "I can tell you that. It takes about four years to get a championship type team put together.
"We were expected because of Dallas to do it one, maybe two years and we haven't done that. I'm disappointed we haven't, but I think we will."
"We were expected because of Dallas to do it one, maybe two years and we haven't done that. I'm disappointed we haven't, but I think we will."
That sounds somewhat reasonable except for two things; one he's working for Jerry Jones; second, Phillips has never coached a championship team.
When you decide to work for Jones you are entering a world of impatience, rash decision-making and results. Jones does not want to wait 4 years to see if you have what it takes, especially when everyone around him is telling him that the Cowboys have what it takes to win right now.
When your playoff record is 0-4, you aren't going to get the luxury of 4 seasons to prove yourself.
Wade is a great coordinator, but he's not proven he can be a great head coach, the best thing for everyone would be for him to go back to doing what he does best, coordinate defense.
