The New England Patriots have signed their 1st round pick out of Tennessee Jerrod Mayo. Mayo makes the Pats instantly better on defense. He's a big, strong, fast and most importantly smart player who played at a very high level against the best D-1 competition, the SEC.
From Boston.com:
"The 6-foot, 1-inch, 242-pound linebacker from the University of Tennessee, who is represented by agent Sean Kiernan, is expected to immediately compete for playing time at inside linebacker in the team's 3-4 defensive scheme. He had said earlier this month that he was eager to get to camp on time. The rookie inside linebacker, drafted with the 10th pick overall in April's draft, will be at the second of the team's two scheduled practices today, the opening day of training camp."
One of the criticisms of the Pats defense the past couple of seasons is their linebackers were ols and slow so what so they do? Go and get the best guy for their system. Make no mistake, the Pats do not whiff on their 1st rounders, Mayo will be a good player and a contributor to their defense right away. They have drafted a contributing starter in the 1st round the past 7 seasons. In 2007 it was DB Brandon Merriweather, 2006 RB Laurence Maroney, 2005 OL Logan Mankins, 2004 NT Vince Wilfork, 2003 DE Ty Warren, 2002 TE Daniel Graham, 2001 Richard Seymour. Not a bad run of draft picks.
