Earlier in the week Jerry Jones popped off to reporters about referee Ed Hichuli saying that Hochuli was a; "highly criticized official." Jones went on to say; "That particular official gets a lot of criticism. He's a highly criticized official in the NFL,'' Jones said.
"Nothing can be done. I understand that after that whistle blows, you can't speculate, `Well, did everybody get the best shot at recovering the ball if some of them heard the whistle and some of them didn't?' ''
Smart Jerry, just brilliant. The Cowboys just beat the Eagles in a great game Monday night and face a very good Packers team on Sunday night, let's keep the talk about the team not about you and your personal feelings about Hochuli."Nothing can be done. I understand that after that whistle blows, you can't speculate, `Well, did everybody get the best shot at recovering the ball if some of them heard the whistle and some of them didn't?' ''
Now that a few days have passed Jones feels that once again he needs to make a point about Hoichuli. This time he made the remarks his weekly interview with 1310 The Ticket's Norm Hitzges this morning.
From the Cowboysblog:
"Rest assured, we all see the error and the impact of a bad call like that," Jerry said. "Now, you could easily say that it rests in the competence of the official not to blow that whistle and maybe an emphasis on that would dramatically change just a real awareness and be punitive in some areas.
"You know, that guy is quick to call penalties. He's quick to draw. He's known for that. ... He's very quick. His crews call a lot of penalties. Maybe the answer is to tell people like that, 'Keep that whistle out your mouth.'"
Jerry elaborated by saying that the league doesn't want officials to call penalties unless the infractions affect the play or threaten the safety of a player. Then he suggested that a solution could be canning whistle-happy refs like Hochuli, who hasn't called a Cowboys game since last season's opener against the Giants.
"My gut here is the emphasis is going to have to be taking officials like that and getting somebody else if they're going to be penalty prone," Jerry said. "Or, in that case, not penalties, but just too quick to call the play dead."
