After spendind a couple of years showing off his knowledge on ESPN, former Titans GM Floyd Reese has been hired by the New England Patriots as a senior football advisor. It's not the kind of headline grabbing move like Tom Brady and Giselle in Mexico but it's the kind of move that will make the Pats even better. Here's why.
Anyone who has read my blog knows I have little respect for Reese as a GM. He believed that you have to put your team into salary cap hell to make a run at the Super Bowl. He helped build the Titans into a good team then because of his lousy skills as GM, especially in regard to contracts, the Titans had to get rid of their best players to get under the salary cap. He also didn't get along with Jeff Fisher, they often clashed over what players to draft, they both still blame the other for drafting Pacman Jones and neither wanted Vince Young, Bud Adams made that pick for the Titans.
Despite his lack of skills as a GM, Floyd did a good job evaluating talent and was able to get players. Floyd was responsible for several good draft picks for the Titans, especially on the offensive and defensive lines, linebackers. Those are, or should be, the positions with the most depth on any team and the Pats have made sure they have plenty of players at those spots. He wasn't able to get a good WR for the Titans but I don't think that was so much Floyd as it was/is the offense the Titans run. Run first and protect the FG are not ideal conditions for a WR to put up the kind of numbers that get big money, noticed and to the Pro Bowl.
Floyd was also able to find good, even great players in the later rounds of the draft. Every year the Titans would find a player or two in the 4th rounds and later that would help them immediately. Players like Cortland Finnegan, Derrick Mason, David Stewart, Jacob Bell were all in the 4th or later in the draft.
Bottom line, I think that he's in a role where he can succeed, that is he's helping and advising for the draft and evaluating players, he's not touching the contracts and does not have final say over the roster.
He and Belichick are friends and he is someone who knows the kinds of players that will work very well in the Pats system.
"Floyd and I go back a long way, practically to the beginning for both of us,” said Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick.
“He has handled as much as one person can possibly handle in this league and to a certain extent, so has Nick. In Nick and Floyd, we have two outstanding men who each bring a wealth of knowledge and flexibility to this organization. I look forward to joining with both of them and working toward the common goal of our team's improvement and success.”
If he sticks with the evaluting and advising he'll make the Pats organizaton even better, a scary thought.
(One report says he will be dealing with contracts, if this is true, the Pats need to rethink his role)

He'll do fine in NE, he won't have final say over anything and won't do contracts, that was his downfall here in TN.
