The NFL has played games in London the past two seasons and plans to continue to play games there in an attempt to grow the game internationally. The game had drawn well but it's hard to imagine it ever overtaking or becoming as popular as the soccer(football) already is in England.
While this has been a nice event that the NFL and the networks play up, the chances of having a permanent NFL team across the pond is 0% in the near future. But the NFL is the NFL and they are not ones to let things happen, they try to push them along.
Word has come out that the NFL is in serious discussions to play a Super Bowl in London. According to the BBC; "the NFL has had 'substantive talks' with officials in London about holding the Super Bowl in the city."
" We've spoken on what it would take to host and for us to bring it over," said events vice-president Frank Supovitz.
"The city has all the facilities needed, and in great quantity."
"We have had very substantive conversations with the city of London. We've got to the point of exploring the bid document,"
"Ever since the NFL began playing games in London we have been in discussions with the NFL about what is involved in staging Super Bowl from the host city perspective," said commercial director David Hornby.
"It continues to be something we discuss on a regular basis, without there being any specific timetable or plan in place."
Several questions will have to be answered before the game will be played there. What will the NFLPA have to say about a game being played in the middle of the night London time to ensure being shown in the US in primetime? How will the broadcasting be split. I don't see CBS, NBC or Fox wanting to share advertising revenue from what will be the most-hyped Super Bowl. That's just two of the thousands of things that will have to be worked out before the game is played there. It will be played, just not in the next 5 years, but it will be played in London.
